Introducing Your New Dog To Your Baby
Posted March 13, 2006

Dear Cesar,

This letter isn't about our dog, but about me. Our neighborhood has many dogs that are loose and tend to claim the road in front of their property as their own. They run out barking when I walk by. On occasion I have been threatened and bitten. Our very young puppy will soon be walking with me, and I don't want to teach it to fear other dogs, but I know I have fear reactions.

Watching your show and DVD helps me to be calm assertive with our dog, and the suggestions are very helpful, but what about with other dogs? I sense that they are reacting to my uncertainty. Any suggestions?

Derek Kit

Dear Derek,

I'm glad that you recognize and acknowledge your own fears, because that is the first step in moving toward your personal empowerment. I suggest talking with a professional about breaking down the barriers of your fears. One of the ways I help my clients to empower themselves is to actually face their fear of dogs by coming into my pack, with me guiding them through the process. Once the person has accomplished becoming calm and assertive within the pack, I then help them to recognize and interpret the dogs' various energies and body language. My first rule is always, "No touch, no talk, no eye contact" when they are interacting with the dogs, because dogs need to sense your energy first before they can become comfortable with you. Practicing empowerment techniques will get you closer to becoming less fearful and help you bring the same calm-assertive energy you practice with your puppy to situations with strange dogs.

Stay calm and assertive,

Cesar Millan
