| Hispanic Heritage Month
September 2007
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and National Grandparents Day, I'd like to share a little about my grandfather who is an important role model in my life. He taught me the most important lesson I ever learned—one I still repeat to myself every single day of my life: “Always work with Mother Nature. You only succeed when you work with her.”
My grandfather was one of many workers and ranch families in Mexico who earned a meager income working parcels of land rented from the richer families. On every farm in the area including his, there were working dogs.
Through observing my grandfather's behavior with the pack on the farm, I learned much of what I apply in my work with dogs today. Other families' found entertainment in watching the dogs fight for dominance, but my grandfather never allowed this. He always made sure that the dogs knew who was in charge: the humans. My grandfather never used violent punishment or gave the dogs treats, and I never saw a dog make an aggressive move towards my grandfather. The dogs followed him. His secret? Calm-assertive energy!
My grandfather was the more in tune with Nature than any other person I have ever met. Though my grandfather passed away at the age of 105, I still thank him everyday for the great wisdom and reverence for Mother Nature that he passed down to me.
Stay calm and assertive!
