| Some of us who travel during the holiday season may be lucky enough to bring our canine companions along for the ride, but for others, this just isn't possible. Finding a good substitute pack can be tough. Here are a few tips for finding the right kennel, shelter, vet’s office, doggie day care, or professional dog-sitters for your pet.
Get recommendations. Ask friends, neighbors, co-workers, vets, groomers, trainers, or other dog professionals you trust. Find two or three facilities that meet your requirements and investigate further.
Visit. Ask to see all the places where your dog will be spending time. Is the facility clean? Does the staff seem competent and compassionate? If you like what you see, set aside a few more hours to be a silent observer and get a sense of their philosophy.
Assess the pack. The staff should be able to get your dog focused on what is there for him – and not leave him mourning over the fact that you left. It is a big deal for a dog to detach himself from a pack. The new pack should equal or better the pack he just left.
Ask questions. What is their idea of “discipline"? How often are the dogs exercised? How do they handle conflict between dogs? What is the procedure if a dog becomes ill? How often are the facilities and animals cleaned? Make a list before you go, so you remember to cover all your concerns.
Check credentials. If your state requires boarding kennel inspections, verify that the facility displays a license or certificate stating that it meets the standards.
Prepare. Make sure that the facility is aware of any special needs and medical conditions your dog may have. A good facility will require that your dog is current on vaccinations, including the Bordetella vaccination for kennel cough. Make an appointment with your veterinarian in advance if necessary.
Trust your instincts. If something just doesn't feel right, find another facility. You want to feel confident that your pet will be safe and comfortable while you are away.
