Dear Cesar,

I am thinking about fostering a Puppy Mill dog through Small Paws Rescue. I have enjoyed and used your techniques on my "Psycho-dog", Teddy. (No longer a psycho dog, thanks to you!) and on our newest rescue, Tinker. I was wondering what to keep in mind about a Puppy Mill dog when rehabilitating him/her. These dogs are not used to being handled, and have lived in cages all their lives. They are usually very much afraid of human touch. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

Dear Susie,

When adopting any dog who may have had a difficult past, It is vital to remember not to dwell on the energy of "feeling sorry" for the dog. Remember, dogs pick up our every emotion, so if you spend too much energy on pity, that will only nurture the dog's insecurities. Keep in mind that when a dog is being taken away from an environment where there has been no outside contact with the world and humans, we must allow them to explore the world on their own. Make sure you manage your own sorry and guilty emotions before you bring the dog home, because he/she will need a calm, quiet person and a secure environment in order to begin healthy development.
