Cesar Millan and the movements of mastery.

In the case of Sugar v. Forman, Cesar Millan knew none of the facts before arriving at the scene of the crime. That is the way Cesar prefers it.

His job was to reconcile Forman with Sugar, and, since Sugar was a good deal less adept in making her case than Forman, whatever he learned beforehand might bias him in favor of the aggrieved party.

The Forman residence was in a trailer park in Mission Hills, just north of Los Angeles. Dark wood panelling, leather couches, deep-pile carpeting. The air-conditioning was on, even though it was one of those ridiculously pristine Southern California days. Lynda Forman was in her sixties, possibly older, a handsome woman with a winning sense of humor. Her husband, Ray, was in a wheelchair, and looked vaguely ex-military. Cesar sat across from them, in black jeans and a blue shirt, his posture characteristically perfect.

July's Online Chat Transcript with Cesar

    National Geographic

Cesar_Millan: Hi everyone. Thanks so much for participating in our online chat. We have a lot of people joining us tonight, so I will try to answer as many questions as I can. Let's get started!

wVirginia: Hi Cesar. Are there certain breeds of dogs that are easier to train than others? Thank you!

Cesar_Millan: Well, in my experience it's not so much the breed that makes training any easier, it's the level of energy the dogs are born with. "Low" and "middle" energy dogs are going to be easier to condition because they are born to be followers. "High" and "very high" energy level dogs are going to require a more experienced owner because those dogs are more likely born to be leaders.

DWFanLady: Hi Cesar! What did you think of the South Park episode that featured you as a character? Did you think it was funny?

Cesar_Millan: It was hilarious! I loved it!

Review: Dog Whisperer Season One DVD

Cesar Millan is one of the most visible dog personalities in recent years. His seminars sell out in days, not weeks. His book has been a best seller for I don’t even know how long. And recently Cesar Millan released the DVD of the first season of his show “The Dog Whisperer” on the “National Geographic Channel.” This is the show and the season that catapulted him out of celebrity homes in Beverly Hills to international fame as the best friends to problem dogs everywhere.

When it comes to Cesar Millan, most dog lovers tend to fall into three camps — Cesar fans, Don’t like Cesar’s methods and people who just haven’t heard about him and “the power of the pack.” Let me say right up front, I am a Cesar fan. Oh there are some things Cesar does that I don’t agree with but overall I appreciate the freshness of his approach to dog behavior. All that said, if you fall into camp one (Cesar fans) or camp three (never heard of Cesar) this is a must have video!

Cesar's Top 5 Tips for Going to the Dog Park

While Cesar encourages everyone to exercise their dog on a regular basis, he also reminds you to keep in mind that a good pack leader maintains leadership even at the dog park. Here are 5 tips Cesar has for dog owners who want to demonstrate good pack leadership.

    1. Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered, has all her shots, and is in good health. Under no circumstances should you bring a sick dog to a dog park!

    2. Do not use the dog park as a substitute for the walk! If you drive to the park, leave your car a block away and take your dog on a vigorous walk of at least thirty-five minutes to drain some of her energy. Never take an over-excited dog to the park.

    3. While at the park, don't "punch out" on your calm-assertive leadership. Be aware of your dog at all times, and take responsibility for her behavior.

    4. A calm-submissive dog will not attract another dog's aggression--but an excited dog, a weak, timid dog, or an aggressive dog can become a fight-magnet.

    5. Know your dog! If your dog has poor social skills, is overly fearful or is dog aggressive, or if you have not yet established your calm-assertive leadership with your dog, find a more controlled way to introduce her to the company of other dogs, such as "play dates" with one or two other dog owners.

Success Story & Next Month's Issue

Stay tuned next month for more information on the premiere of Season Three of Dog Whisperer, and more on Cesar Millan WEBINARS. In the meantime, here is a success story from Jennifer Fuller who recently attended Cesar's seminar:

    Hi,

I just wanted to say thank you for creating such a wonderful seminar. I am currently starting my own rescue and behavioral center, aimed at being able to offer basic obedience training and behavior modification to other area rescues, at little or no cost to them, and I was at an emotional low point, but your seminar on August 5th gave me the inspiration and motivation I needed to get me back on track. You are truly a joy to listen to. Too many people today feel that we must treat dogs as we would other people and that any type of hands-on training is cruel, but your methods just seem to make more sense. Not to mention they actually work!! I left the shelter I was volunteering at when a few of the other board members came back from a seminar at the Best Friends sanctuary and were suddenly against your methods and were insisting that I do the no-contact training for all of the dogs, even the aggressive ones! You were my inspiration for opening my shelter and rehab center. Thank you so much. I know that you can never understand the difference you make in other peoples lives, not to mention all the dogs you save.

    Keep up the good work!
