1.) Tire your dog out before visiting or receiving holiday guests. Keep in mind that holiday visits are not typical visits. They may involve more heightened energy than normal, since often we haven't seen these people in a while. Dog people have a tendency to get excited around others' pets. Your dog is more likely to behave if it's just had a nice long walk. If they're not dog people, your guests may be nervous, insecure and unsure; a tired dog can help these people relax.
2.) Don't forget rules, boundaries and limitations just because it's the holidays! When it comes to aromatic holiday food and sweets and candies lying about the house, there are many temptations for your dog. You have to remind him or her that the rules, boundaries and limitations are the same. Use the holiday as a chance to intensify good behavior instead of intensifying bad behavior. It's up to you to take the opportunity to make it a great holiday by working on your leadership skills!
3.) Protect your dog from the cold. Many breeds are not built to handle cold weather. Check out your local pet store for the many ways to handle this. You can buy doggie boots and gear made specifically for cold weather. There are also paw waxes that protect from the cold and aid your dog's grip on slippery surfaces like ice or snow.

Many people don’t know that Daddy originally belonged to rapper Redman. When the pit bull was four months old, Redman didn’t feel he could care for it properly in his environment. He sought a trainer and, through a referral, found Cesar. Daddy has been with the Millan family ever since!
Daddy was Cesar’s first right-hand dog. Since Cesar raised him from four months of age, Daddy was used to being around dogs of all sizes. This exposure and his natural balanced energy made him a perfect candidate for rehabilitating other dogs, particularly those with dog-aggressive issues. Daddy doesn’t react unless he is given a command to react, and his calm-submissive energy is contagious.
One of Daddy’s remarkable traits is his extreme tolerance for smaller dogs. He allows them to do whatever they want to him. Italian greyhounds Lita and Rex like to climb on top of Daddy, often curling around his body to go to sleep.

Dear Dr. Weaver,
There are many websites pro and con on raw diets. The pro websites say you can relieve your dog of allergy agents known to be in commercial kibble, such as corn, wheat and soy. The con websites warn against salmonella poisoning and bacterial infections. Can you give insight on this subject, particularly in relation to feeding chicken, beef and lamb? Is there an increased risk of Neospora or other health-related issues with feeding dogs raw diets?
Thank You,
Cheryl
Cheryl,
The decision on what to feed our canine children is a complex one. There are pet food companies shouting at you that, if you don’t feed their food, you don’t love your dog, and well-meaning others who want to convince you that anything commercial is taking the lazy way out. There are foods that are “all natural” and foods with tasty bits to convince your finicky dog to eat. Just like feeding ourselves, it is very hard to sort out the truth from the marketing.

In the meantime, here’s our featured success story from Gigi Kisil from Surprise, AZ:
Hello Cesar,
I just wanted to let you know of a great experience I had because of your show. Recently I had to start giving my dog, Riley, fluids twice a week. I was really stressed about it because I knew it was painful for her and I am not used to giving anyone a shot. It got to be a real fight, and she tried to nip/bite me on a regular basis. Basically it was getting worse with each injection, just really tense and stressful!
Luckily for me, there was a re-run of your show that aired about these people who had to give their dog medicine. In it, I learned that I had to be peaceful, that I couldn't try to calm her with affection when she was fighting me and that I should give her a massage while the fluids were going in.
I incorporated all of those things for the last few injections, and I have to tell you this. Yesterday, I got out the IV bag as I always do and instead of running the other direction she walked right over to me and laid down to get her injection. I wanted to cry I was so happy. She also makes her happy deep breathing noises while she is getting her fluids. Wow. Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Gigi Kisil
