Ilusion Millan

Throughout history, women of every race and creed have shaped and strengthened our country and the world. March was designated Women’s History Month to help us remember the contributions of these extraordinary women. In honor of this, Cesar has asked that his wife Ilusion write the Opening Letter to this month’s newsletter.

Greetings,

I believe that a community depends on how well women can hold it together. Women are the backbone of families, organizations, companies…and packs. In the past, primarily men have been honored for their work in the public sphere, but those men came home to women who supported them, inspired them, and kept their families strong.

Historically, many women have embraced community and promoted togetherness. The concept of togetherness brings me personal strength. As women, our skills are versatile, and we are built for the age of multi-tasking. As we take more and more action in the public sphere, hopefully we can empower the world with this simple yet powerful concept.

I take on promoting togetherness everyday with my family, my husband, and our companies. But I am human. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don’t. You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to have children or be married. I believe consistency is what will get you there. I invite you to embrace yourself as a woman and spread the message of togetherness. I have found the results fulfilling and joyful, and I hope you will, too.

Stay calm and assertive!

Dog Whisperer Sneak Peek: Cesar Goes Back to Mexico

Article 1Tune in on March 2nd to watch Cesar help MTV personality “Downtown” Julie Brown and her husband Martin Schuermann with their spoiled “doggie diva” Candy. Next, Cesar helps soap star and director Michael Damian and his producer wife Janeen with Bella, the five-month-old puppy who won’t leave their cat alone. Also, Cesar teaches canine social etiquette to lonely Rottweiler Titan.

And on March 9th, Cesar helps dog groomer Shannon Benecke with mix Dasher, an Italian Greyhound with a demonic side, and maneuvers Mastiff Riley into calm submission. And the Dog Whisperer travels to Chicago to help Daphne with Fosse, a Yorkshire Terrier who attacks ironing boards, hair dryers, and electrical cords.

Then, on a very special episode March 30th, Cesar travels to Mexico to work with United Hope for Animals, a non-profit organization committed to ending the suffering and mistreatment of dogs and cats in Tijuana and Southern California.  After three years of working for change in Tijuana, UHA has become the first animal-welfare organization to form a relationship with the Tijuana pound officials.  Comprised entirely of volunteers, United Hope for Animals makes innumerable trips to Tijuana, offering free spaying and neutering clinics, as well as humane euthanasia as an alternative to electrocution.  The volunteers rescue the dogs that have a good chance of getting a new home, spay or neuter them, and bring them back to the U.S.  Cesar Millan joins the brave volunteers of United Hope for Animals in their mission to rescue these stray pets, and to educate the citizens of Tijuana about the serious problem of overpopulation of dogs and cats in Mexico.

Next Cesar travels to Brooklyn to meet dog owner Maureen Lovetro, who was born with cerebral palsy. When she was four, Maureen’s grandfather promised to buy her a dog with the hope that, by walking the dog, her legs would grow stronger.  Now Maureen is seventeen; her “gift dog”, Cocker Spaniel Chloe, is eight…and things haven’t exactly turned out as her grandfather planned.  Maureen’s mother Wendy never felt that Chloe respected Maureen but instead treated Maureen like her own puppy.  Chloe will often take things from Maureen’s hands and “taunt” her.  While on walks with Wendy, Chloe obeys; however, with Maureen, Chloe goes where she wants and pulls on the leash, often knocking Maureen from her walker.  If people try to greet Maureen in the house or on the street, Chloe will bark and nip at them.  Wendy would like Cesar to teach Maureen how to gain Chloe’s respect, so she can become a real service dog, as intended.

Welcome Stacey Candella!

For well over a decade, Stacey Candella has strived to make a true difference for homeless pets. Following her compassionate need to make life better for as many animals as she could, Stacey began volunteer work with rescue agencies and shelters in the mid-1990's.

From that experience, she created and developed a valuable tool—a comprehensive, one-stop Internet web portal. The portal made “localized” information about pets and strays, including lost or found pets, pictures of adoptable pets, veterinarians and low cost spay-and-neuter locations available to pet owners, would-be pet owners, shelters and rescue agencies across the country. Under Stacey's competent guidance, the web site she established would eventually grow to become the nationally recognized PETS911.com, the highly respected agency serving millions of visitors each month.

During the seven years she served as PETS911.com's executive director, Stacey supervised a staff of more than thirty dedicated professionals, and worked directly with over 8,000 shelter and rescue organizations across the country, including such highly respected national organizations as the Humane Society of the United States, Animal Hospital Association, American Humane, Doris Day Animal Foundation, Pet Savers Foundation, and Spay USA. Stacey's efforts through PETS911.com helped save the lives of hundreds of thousands of homeless and lost pets. Stacey continues to produce inventive means and methods to change the way our country cares for rescued and sheltered pets.

In her new position as Executive Director of the Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation, Stacey will continue her mission of working for animals in need. Cesar and Ilusion Millan are proud and honored to have Stacey as part of their team.

Famous Women and Their Dogs

Stacey CandellaWoman’s Best Friend
Before there was Cesar’s Way, there was the Woodhouse way.  Popular British television personality and dog trainer Barbara Woodhouse was born in Ireland in 1910.  It’s probably safe to say that she became a dog lover when the canine bug bit her at just two years of age – literally.  She was bitten on the nose by a mutt purchased from a gypsy when she hugged the dog too tightly.  Years later, she rescued… Read on.

Eyes For The Blind
Dogs and mankind enjoy a special partnership. Few other animals in the history of civilization have woven themselves so tightly into our everyday lives. For thousands and thousands of years, dogs have been our friends, our sentries, our beasts of burden, our police force, emergency medical and fire technicians, hunters, shepherds, and even our therapists. And in 1929, after a heartfelt plea from a blind man in Nashville, Tennessee, Dorothy Harrison Eustis would envision and implement a conditioning program in the United States and Switzerland designed to train certain breeds to be our eyes... Dog Save The Queen
Haute couture in America owes a great debt to Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Hollywood starlets, dog breeders, and anyone else who enjoys the madness of toy Pomeranians, give homage: the dog you tote around in your little pink handbag has royal ancestry.

Born on the 24th of May, 1819, and later Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Empress of India, Victoria was a devoted dog fancier. Beginning at a young age, spurred along by gifts from her great grandmother Queen Charlotte, Victoria would go on to raise fifteen separate and... Read on.

Dr. Weaver and Howie's New Home

When Kathy and Kate told me that they were going to submit Howie to Dog Whisperer, I was excited that there might be someone out there who could help him.

Of course, it seemed like a long shot that we would be selected, so when we got the final confirmation, I was ecstatic. I have to be honest that I was not very familiar with Cesar at the time, which made it an extra special surprise when I got to see him in action.  As a veterinarian, I have worked with many trainers, but to see Cesar’s easy, confident style and immediate results was inspiring.

After the team had set up and shot the background story, Cesar arrived. He wanted to know nothing about Howie’s history, so he could just walk in and get to know him with no bias. I swear it happened just as you see it on the show! He walked into the office (which no man has been able to do before) and immediately made contact. His ideas were so direct and insightful that Kate and Kathy were able to implement them in no time at all. You could see why he is called “the dog whisperer." He instinctively understands what is driving the dog and what has to change. By the end of the day, the changes in Howie were obvious, and that was just the start--think how much better after we worked with him for weeks and months!

Cesar's Co-Stars: Profiles of Pack Members - Beauty

Before German Shepherd Beauty arrived at the Dog Psychology center, her owner was so afraid of her human and dog aggression that she kept the dog isolated in one room of her home for nearly two years. Her owner, a wonderful lady with a big heart, had rescued her from an abusive situation. Though she thought she was protecting Beauty by isolating her, the fears of her owner fed Beauty's unbalanced state of mind and resulted in psychological damage.

Luckily, Beauty's owner would not give up on her and brought her to Cesar for help. Cesar evaluated Beauty and discovered a severe case of fear aggression. He attributed the degree of her unbalanced state to the confinement and her lack of experience with the outside world.

Beauty's rehabilitation began when she was brought into to The Pack. The dogs in The Pack would introduce her to her own identity.

Early on, Beauty displayed a coping mechanism for her anxiety and fears: jumping. She easily cleared the eight-foot chain-link fence that surrounded the Center. Once she made it to the other side, she was free, but she never ran away. Beauty would simply sit and wait to be called back to The Pack. In dogs, fear drives the brain to run and stay away, but her submissive nature kept her bound to the physical presence of The Pack.

United Hope For Animals

Ask The Vet

In the city of Tijuana, countless stray dogs and cats roam the streets every day. United Hope for Animals (UHFA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the animals in this city.

For many years, electrocution was the only method used to put down animals in Tijuana and many parts of Mexico.  In August 2006, through the efforts of UHFA and the cooperation of the Tijuana pound (the perrera), the electrocutions have ceased.  UHFA now provides euthanol to the perrera, and their trained volunteer veterinarian technicians offer gentle passing for dogs, which would otherwise suffer electrocution.

Each month UHFA and the Humane Society de Tijuana hold a free spay and neuter clinic in Tijuana. Through their combined efforts, more than a thousand pets have been spayed or neutered. Spaying or neutering even one pet could ultimately stop the suffering of thousands of homeless pets. UHFA facilitate the rescue, foster care, and adoption of animals whenever possible, and they offer education and support to those involved in the care of animals.

The United Hope for Animals is featured in an upcoming episode of Dog Whisperer. They are a non-profit organization and exist solely on volunteers and donations.

Success Story & Next Month's Newsletter

Join us next month to meet another pack member and learn more about the Dog Whisperer’s appearance on Ghost Whisperer! Remember if you have any questions or concerns about your dog, please consult a local professional.

Greetings from Holts Summit, Missouri.  Hope the New Year is starting off wonderful for you.  Tell everyone I said "Hi."

I wanted to write and ask if you would communicate my thanks to Cesar.  I just watched his 1/26/07 episode of Dog Whisperer that took place in Atlanta, GA.  He not only helped Howie, but he also helped me to help a new addition to my pack.

On 12/30/07, Dave and I rescued a four year-old, dog-aggressive, male Australian Shepherd to our pack, who had spent the last five months in a shelter.  Using Cesar's techniques, he joined our pack of six dogs without problem.  First, he and I did "The Walk!"  Then Dave, he and I walked, and then three pack members joined us at my veterinary clinic.  Following this, we went home, I walked him around our home, and he joined the last 3 pack members on our walk.  It was the most amazing and relaxed introduction of a pack member...
