Dog Whisperer Meets Ghost Whisperer

April 2007 Issue

Cesar Millan

Greetings,

Well, the Dog Whisperer met the Ghost Whisperer, and it was a lot of fun! I've been on a few movie sets before, but this was a little different. I was an actor, at least for the day.

From the beginning, I had a great time. I had a special parking spot right in the front. I had my own trailer. It seems like everyone around had a dog, so they all knew who I was! Everyone there really made me feel like a special guest, from the person who made the food to the big executives. There was really great energy all around, no stress and no nervousness.

I didn't have to act much, because I was playing myself! I was giving Jennifer Love Hewitt's character advice on how to help a dog, what to do and what not to do. Jennifer and I had a really good time doing the scene, laughing and enjoying ourselves. Making the scene sound real is hard, especially since you have to do the scene over and over several times. Each time we would tweak it a bit. We were always working to improve it. I really wanted it to sound real, and I think it came out well.

It was a really fun experience. I hope you'll check out the episode of Ghost Whisperer Friday, March 30th at 8PM EST/PST! Then tune in to Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel at 9PM EST/PST for an episode that means a lot to me.

Stay calm and assertive!

The Dog Whisperer Meets The Ghost Whisperer

Our very own Cesar Millan will be peering into the great beyond this month as he offers his keen insight into dog psychology to Jennifer Love Hewitt in a special crossover episode of The Ghost Whisperer.

Homer the Ghost Dog returns to the town of Grandview, and his dominant spectral energy seems to be upsetting Delia's (Emmy Award Winner Camryn Manheim) own golden retriever. When Delia seeks help at a local book signing from renowned Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan, Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) tags along to see if Cesar's advice can help her lay Homer's soul to rest.

Tune in to catch The Ghost Whisperer at 8pm EST/PST, Friday, March 30 on the CBS Television Network, and don't forget to watch a very special Dog Whisperer on National Geographic Channel at 9 pm EST/PST for the rest of the answers to this month's contest quiz!

Ask the Vet: Handling Fleas

I have had dogs all my life and never experienced fleas. We recently got them on all three dogs (of course) and have been using over-the-counter remedies that are not working very well. Plus, I do not like using chemicals on my carpet and on the dogs.

Would you happen to have a natural remedy I can create that will work? I remember my father putting garlic on the dog's food and using cedar shavings for bedding, and he swore by that to keep fleas and ticks away.

Thank you for your time, and I appreciate any help you can offer.

Ginny Amaral
Kissimmee, FL

First, most over-the-counter remedies for fleas will not work. When you are treating fleas, you have to focus on three things: the pet, the house, and the yard. Sometimes if you address the house aggressively enough, it is possible to ignore the other two areas, but you should...

Cesar's Co-Stars: Profiles of Pack Members - Dottie

From Death Row to the Red Carpet - Dottie the Staffordshire Bull Terrier's life has been a rags to riches story with a glamorous Hollywood twist.

It begins in a shelter for Boston Terriers in California. Staffordshire Terriers, or “Staffies”, are frequently mistaken for Boston Terriers because of their size and monochromatic markings. Dottie was dropped off at the Lancaster Pound and was brought to the attention of the Boston Terrier Rescue Group for adoption. But, upon learning that pit bull breeds could not be accepted by the group, the pound opted instead to schedule her for destruction. A shelter worker called a close friend and lover of pit bulls to report the find, and soon afterward, 6-month-old Dottie was safe and sound.

Although originally bred to be loving and devoted farm and family dogs, Staffies' assimilation into the dangerous world of dog fighting eventually bred in them a natural aggressiveness towards other dogs. In order to rid Dottie of her instinctual aggression, Cesar invited her to visit his pack at the Dog Psychology Center. Her problems there were short-lived. One low growl at Daddy was all it took to show her who was really in charge.

Since then, she has calmed considerably around other dogs, enjoys socializing at dog parks, and, in a final, Cinderalla-style...

Interview with Ilusion Millan: Dogs and Kids

Recently, Ilusion Millan worked with the project K-9 Connection, a program that works with at-risk 12- to 18-year-old kids. Through training homeless shelter dogs in basic obedience, the group empowers the teenagers to apply the lessons they teach the dogs to their own lives. She is also developing a week-long school curriculum to teach children about pet care and animal cruelty.

Tell me about your experience with K-9 Connection.

Oh, my gosh, I had so much fun. They're just such wonderful teenagers. It was such an exciting experience, because each of these kids is or has been at risk, but they have taken on projects to regain their self-respect, love, and confidence. They take on the challenge of training basic obedience to dogs which are adopted out when their three-week program is completed.

Cesar on Coping with a Dog's Death

Ask The Vet

The death of a dog is a hard reality all dog owners eventually face, and the sense of loss can be overwhelming. Each of us handles mourning differently; the most important thing to do is allow yourself to grieve. Don't put a limit on how long it should last. Just make sure to go through the grief, so you are able to move on.

If it is especially painful, put away the bed, toys, and pictures of your dog while you go through that mourning period. Often having these reminders around makes it harder to move on.

Be aware that your grief will affect the other pets in your home. If you are still in mourning, you may block them from being able to move on also.

Do not bring another animal into your life until you have completed the mourning process. When you are grieving, you may not be able to display consistent calm-assertive energy in order to establish yourself as the pack leader. If you adopt a new dog, that animal won't know you're grieving for somebody who has passed away. All he will know is that you are in a weaker state than him. This is not what's best for the new dog.

When you do feel ready to bring a new dog into your life, you must treat her as just that - a new dog. Often, people want their...

Success Story & Next Month's Newsletter

Join us next month for another nose-to-nose meeting with a member of Cesar's pack, lots of fun facts, helpful advice from Dr. Weaver, and details regarding Cesar's new book and the 4th season of Dog Whisperer! Remember, if you have any questions or concerns about your dog, please consult a local professional.

For now, here's a success story from the blog of Jennifer McPhail of Roanoke, VA:

My roommate's mom gave me the Dog Whisperer DVD set to watch months ago. I broke them out the other day, and I've been hooked. I can't stop watching them. It is truly amazing. I've really realized that in some respects I've been treating my dogs like people instead of dogs. They have become my roommates rather then my pets. Especially little miss Desiree, the most spoiled of the spoiled.

Now, both of my dogs have been through doggy obedience class... but I have never been able to walk them both on a leash at the same time. They struggle for the lead, leaving me dragging behind. Why? Because they are fighting for pack leader and not following me. As a result I never take them on walks and I dread putting leashes on them.

I decided this morning to put the Dog Whisperer to the challenge...
