Hello there Dr. Weaver: My husband and I just happened to tune in yesterday to the Dog Whisperer show, and we were captivated. We instantly put the Walk techniques into practice and are already seeing results.
My question has to do with the appropriate medical shots for our two dogs. Apollo is a 10-11 year old lab/stratfordshire mix, about 70-lbs, and Duke is a 7-8 year old lab/shepherd/Rottweiler mix. Their annual shots run close to $600! I’m not convinced all those expensive shots are necessary. What do you recommend as the necessary annual shots they should get? They’re both in excellent health, walked and exercised daily and very active.
Many thanks!
Lar and Lola
The first thing you need to do is separate out the parts of what your vet is calling the “annual shots”. Every vet has slightly different recommendations, but the common components are the exam, lab tests, vaccines, and preventative medications. As a consumer you can choose which parts you want to do financially, but medically they all have value.
The Exam: The single most important part of the annual is the physical exam. Especially as your dogs get older, there are many conditions that a physical can detect so that you can provide early intervention. If you consider that in average dog years, your dog ages 7 years for every year between exams. This is actually a long time between exams, and many vets will recommend an exam every 6 months especially for dogs over 7.

Not just another pretty face!
Readers who attended the Orange County Pet Expo on the 14th of April may know Sabrina the pit bull from her role as Cesar’s latest leading lady, prancing up and down the stage parading the new Illusion collar for a packed house. But the children in her Santa Ana neighborhood have a somewhat different picture of her. To them, she’s more role model than runway model – a shining example of the triumph of the positive pack mentality over red line aggression.
Sabrina was only 5 months old when she was found on the streets by the neighborhood kids and delivered into the hands of her new guardians. Her previous caretakers owned several other fighting dogs, and it was agreed that it would be in her best interest to make the adoption official. But her new home life met with a rocky beginning when she began to exhibit outward signs of dominant behavior (even lifting her leg to pee!) and challenged Buster, the resident family pit bull, for control of the house.

The staff of Cesar Millan, Inc. is proud to announce that, through the efforts of the non-profit organization k9 Connection, Cesar’s Way has been approved as an educational text for English and Science classes throughout the Santa Monica and Malibu unified school district!
Regular readers may recall learning about k9 Connection in last month’s issue, when we interviewed Ilusion Milan about her involvement in the group for the article Dogs and Kids. For those unfamiliar with them, they are an outreach program which works locally with at-risk teens ages 12-18, bringing them together with rescue dogs in an effort to bring about a positive change. Eight teens and eight dogs come together in a daily 3-week program designed to help the kids train the dogs to make them more adoptable…

Dear Cesar, I have a question regarding a face-to-face encounter with a dog you don't know. Whether it be in a friend's or acquaintance's house, or on a street, what is the best move to avoid an attack?
Dear Greg,
This is the hardest lesson for me to teach anybody, but it’s an important one for people to learn.
The first thing I try to remember if a strange dog is acting aggressively toward me is to not take it personally. I don’t feed any fear in me, or anxiety; I get very calm. Believe it or not, what will be instrumental in blocking the animal from attacking you is for you to be calm and unafraid. An aggressive dog wants you under stress before it attacks. If you are calm and in control of yourself, it slows them down and throws them off.
Once I have asserted myself, I claim my own space. Often, I use a walking stick, an umbrella, or anything I happen to be carrying and place it out in front of me, so I make myself appear bigger and feel more in command of my space. What I am saying with my body language is, I don’t want the dog’s space...

For now, here’s a success story from Kaisa Longoria of Indianapolis, IN:
About 3 years ago, I worked as an attorney in the Public Defender's office here in Indianapolis. A client from a very disadvantaged area of the inner city came in one afternoon with her then 11-year-old son. The child immediately looked at photos of my dogs and said, "Look, Mom - a Great Pyrenees!" This was surprising. He then told me all about Cesar and the fact that the child, inspired by Cesar, had essentially blackmailed an uncle into giving him a wonderful dog he was using for dogfights. The little boy was working with her and later even brought me her photo. At that point, although they were very short on resources, the mother kept cable TV on for the boy to see "Dog Whisperer" and did everything she could to keep his rescue efforts (five dogs) going while encouraging him to keep doing well in school so he could one day become a veterinarian. I know Cesar is busy but hope this story will make its way to him. He needs to know about the amazing amount of good he is spreading in the world.
Thank you.
Kaisa Longoria
