Dear Dr. Weaver,
I have a Schnauzer Pongo who is approximately 7-8 yrs old. He is a rescue dog, therefore his age is a guesstimate. He was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease a year ago and is on Lysodren 500mg three times a week (Monday, Thursday, and Saturday.) He is also checked every 6 weeks with a loading dose and follow-up blood work. Pongo still pants and drinks excessive amounts of water. Of course he has the "pot belly," eats [a premium] dry food (a handful for breakfast and dinner), and goes on a daily walk with me after sun down.
I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about this disease.
Thank you so much,
Suzanne Benton
Hello Suzanne,
You have described the classic symptoms of Cushing’s disease; pot belly, increased appetite, panting, and excessive water intake and urination. The disease is extremely common in middle-aged and older dogs. In a situation like yours, with proper diagnosis and ongoing treatment, the symptoms should be controllable.
I would first ask your vet if you could regulate the hormone levels any more tightly. There are ranges of acceptable values on the follow-up lab results, so there may be some leeway in the medication...

Say "hello" to my little friend!
Tony the Chihuahua is nestled snugly in a burrow of cardigan sweater and couch cushions. From this makeshift den he watches with one bleary eye cracked half-open as his owner recounts the story of his adoption; an adoption which, were it not for a bit of luck and some friendly persuasion from a long-term member of Cesar's Pack, might not have happened at all!
It was a visit from Calvin Millan's Chihuahua Coco that prompted Tony's owner, who had until that moment never even considered owning a dog, to begin searching for a tiny companion of her own. A visit to a rescue website turned up a photograph of a 10 year old, solid color, short-haired Chihuahua, and the bond was nearly instantaneous. All of the necessary calls were made, questions answered, and checks completed, but just when the adoption seemed assured - after roommates, landlord, and fiancé had all been convinced - the notice came in from the rescue: Tony had already been claimed by another family.
With Tony unavailable, the idea of adopting another dog in his place seemed heartbreaking. But fortunes turned when the family who...

We just adopted a great little dog. She is well-behaved but she won't come when we call her. She thinks it's a game to run away. Otherwise, she is very obedient... and smart!
- David Kimmett
A lot of times in situations like this one we're not taking into consideration that the dog is still sniffing around when we ask him to come. That's going against Mother Nature. The dog is paying attention to something else, and you're not going to redirect his attention with sound if he's paying attention with nose or sight. When the dog is...

… no one, that is, except Cesar Millan!
Thanks to a specially scheduled satellite linkup with the International Space Station, Cesar was able to spend some quality time with astronaut Sunita Williams, who was able to provide us with this issue's spectacular photo of the month! Pictured here, suspended in zero gravity above a porthole window and silhouetted by a breathtaking view of the Earth over a thousand miles below, is Sunita's copy of Cesar's Way.
From all of us at Cesar Millan, Inc., thank you to Sunita Williams of the International Space Station, low Earth Orbit! Stay calm and assertive and have a safe flight home.

Hi!
Watching Cesar's show changed our lives! His method of exercise, discipline and affection has completely changed our household. This is my story:
We have 6 dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds. After our recent additions (two Katrina rescues) came to live with us, we started having problems. Storm, a Min-Pin, was a bundle of energy that really set off our Terrier Mix. We had to break up some pretty scary fights …
