Cesar Millan Introduces Junior, Daddy's Rising Star!
April 2008 Issue

Cesar MillanGreetings,

April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. This issue is very important to me. A lot of abusive human beings are not in touch with their emotions. In order to express their pent-up frustration, fear, sadness, or loneliness, they lash out at those most vulnerable - animals - even though these creatures have nothing to do with what they are feeling. Sometimes these animals react by lashing out right back, and sadly, many of these misunderstood animals are sentenced to death as a result.

I believe the most effective way to stop this cycle of violence is to teach our youth about the proper treatment of animals. Children are like sponges; they are constantly learning from their experiences. If something truly touches the heart and soul of a child, it stays with him or her into adulthood. This type of education can create a cycle of a different sort: a cycle of compassion.

Often, it takes a catastrophe for people to come together and make a positive change, but it doesn't always have to be that way. We can work together to prevent tragedy. It begins in our communities, our neighborhoods, and our homes. We can all be a part of the solution. I encourage you to take a moment each day to think about how you can fulfill others' lives - human or animal!

Stay calm and assertive,

Cesar Millan

The Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation is working hard to promote this change by providing compassion education to children at a young age. Your donations and support make this possible.

Ask Cesar: Fearful Shelter Dog
"We adopted a dog almost a year ago from a local shelter. He was terrified and cowered in the corner because of abuse. After 20 hours with us, he was able to run away when I walked out the door. Today, almost 11 months later, he was found in a neighboring county, still behaving the same. Terrified, cowering down, no eye contact, unwilling to walk... My question is: what you think I should do to help this dog?"

Ask The Vet: Trouble Breathing
"We have a cocker spaniel, and he has huge allergies. He has trouble breathing all of the time. We tried inhalers and breathing treatments. It seems to help for a few minutes but, after that, it is downhill again. He is allergic to a lot of things, but we keep that under direct supervision. Is there anything we can try to help his breathing problems?"

National Volunteer Month Contest
April is also National Volunteer Month! So to honor our charitable readership, we're foregoing the usual scavenger hunt trivia quiz contest format and opting instead for something a little more hands-on!

CMI knows that its readers are all about grand philanthropic gestures in the canine community, so we're looking for photos of you hard at work volunteering for your favorite animal welfare provider. It can be a shelter or rescue, a local veterinarian's office, animal control... anyplace you put in time making the world a happier and healthier place for our four-legged friends! Make sure the photo shows you in action, either in uniform, or decked out in your favorite Dog Whisperer gear!

Upload your photo to a free service like Flickr or Picasa, and send us the link using the Photo of the Month menu on the contact form. May the best volunteer win!
