Happy 4th of July from the Dog Whisperer
July 2008 Issue
Cesar MillanGreetings,

More pets are lost on the 4th of July than any other day. I encourage you to take your dog's safety seriously. Keep a keen eye on your dog during the commotion, and make sure your dog is wearing proper identification. It is natural for dogs to be afraid of loud noises. The sounds trigger their nervous system, and they can become nervous, afraid, unsure, or shy. Running away from the noise is a survival mechanism.

The best way to prevent this is to condition your dog to be comfortable with the sound of fireworks at least 3 to 4 months in advance. It's a simple process, but it takes time. Whether or not you have prepared in advance, it is a good idea to take your dog on a very long walk before the celebration. If you normally take your dog out for thirty minutes, go for two hours instead. You want your dog to be completely exhausted; this way his brain will be so tired that he won't even hear the fireworks! During the festivities, keep your dog on a leash to give you more control. For more tips on how to help your dog cope with the stress of fireworks, click here.

Remember, maintain calm and assertive energy. Don't feel sorry or frustrated. Don't blame the fireworks or the people setting them off. These negative emotions will just feed your dog's anxiety; it won't help the situation. If you learn that your dog is afraid of fireworks this 4th of July, start working now to condition him for next year. Don't wait until the last minute to do something about it, and next year the 4th of July will be a walk in the park!

Stay calm and assertive,

Cesar Millan

Sneak Peek: July Episode Premieres
On July 18th at 9 PM ET/PT, professional realtor Ernesto Robles presents Cesar with a new breed of problem: his four children are hounding him to buy them a puppy, but Ernesto is terrified of dogs and has been his entire life! Ernesto wants to know how it feels to walk on the street without this fear, and he also wants to provide his wife and children with a four-legged companion. Will his cynophobia be dog-gone, or will Ernesto remain a scaredy-cat?

Then on July 25th, Cesar is called in to help Bravo TV personality Kathy Griffin with her two rowdy rescue pups. The star of My Life on the D List can’t seem to get control of her dogs, even with the help of her assistants. Can Cesar break their cycle of aggression and misbehavior? Also in this episode: Cesar is enlisted to civilize a hostile Doberman mix for a couple and their new 6 month old baby, and Animal Communicator Susan Hill calls for backup when her “words” don’t get through to her panicked Pinscher.

Finally, on August 1st, the first of a two-part episode entitled “Canine 9-1-1” featuring cases taken from a Huntington Beach PETCO audition: Conrad and Cristina are at a loss when it comes to their tenacious, four-year-old deaf Boxer named Maggie. Maggie’s unruly behavior can’t be controlled with voice commands, and the stress she puts on the home has the potential to aggravate Cristina’s Multiple Sclerosis. Will Cesar find the panacea for their failure to communicate? Also in this episode: Cesar is approached by the dedicated volunteers at the Orange County Humane Society to step in on behalf of Apollo, a male-aggressive Rottweiler whose days are numbered. Can their hard work grant Apollo a pardon?

Ask Cesar: Working With A Deaf Dog
"My thirteen year old Standard Poodle has always been very well behaved and listened attentively to commands (such as “sit” or “quiet”). Unfortunately she's lost her hearing with age, so verbal commands no longer have the same effect. She barks much louder and will bark at the entrance to the kitchen until she gets food or someone pets her - this is a recent behavior that she never exhibited before. She gets very disruptive! What can we do to help calm her? And what other general cues can we use since she can no longer hear us?"

Read Cesar's reply.

Ask The Vet: Bone Cancer
"Would you help shed some light on bone cancer in dogs? We have a thirteen-year-old Rottweiler who was just diagnosed with bone cancer in her two left legs. She is having a challenge getting up and around but still has an appetite. How do I tell if she is in too much pain? Do you have any suggestions on how to help her with that pain?"

Pack Profile: Zoey
Zoey the toy Cockapoo (for the uninitiated, that’s the popular shorthand for “cocker spaniel/toy poodle mix”) is on a VERY strict diet. She is fed the same measured portions of the same food at the same time each day. Her twice-a-day walks are consistent in length and happen without fail, worked around her humans’ busy schedules. And as a result of this well-regulated routine, together with daily shots of insulin, Zoey has lived a normal and healthy life for the last five and a half years with canine diabetes.

More Live Auditions in Southern California
Meet the Producers of Dog Whisperer Sheila Emery and Kay Sumner at a PETCO near you! Be prepared to describe your dog's problem behavior. Dogs are welcome, but your dog does not need to attend to be considered. A video of your dog's behavior must be submitted to be chosen for the show. We would love to see video footage of aggressive dogs, but for safety reasons, we ask that you leave them at home.
